Simple Postgame Snack Ideas that are 3 Ingredients or Less

With football, soccer and plenty of other fall sports getting ready to start, it’s time to talk about that pivotal postgame snack.

Whether your kid’s team wins or loses, everyone’s hungry when it’s over and it’s up to you to deliver the goods.

Sure, we can always do chips and soda, and there will be hectic days when that’s all we can do. But I try to go for a healthier snack that doesn’t take much time.

That, admittedly, is a tough balance.

On the one hand, kids need something better than junk food to recover. But, if you deviate too far into the healthy zone, you risk losing the interest of the kids, which means there’s a chance your snacks go to waste.

Don’t worry. I’ve pulled together the favorite Go To snacks that refuel my kids and their teammates after the game — but are still affordable and easy for me, all with 3 ingredients or less:

  1. Colorful Trail Mix

Kids are instantly drawn to colorful snacks. Mix M&Ms in equal parts with two or more of the following: raisins or dried cranberries, nuts, dry cereal like Cheerios or Chex, pretzels, cheese crackers, mini graham crackers or mini marshmallows for a sweet taste with a fun crunch.

Divide into individual plastic zippered snack bags and have them ready by the final whistle.

  1. Pickles in a Blanket

Way more fun than a sandwich, these are quick to make and the kiddos can help!

Start with a slice of Land O Frost Black Forest Ham or Honey Turkey Breast, spread a thin layer of softened cream cheese over one side. Place a pickle spear in the center and roll it up. Keep chilled until serving.

Pro tip: Gently blot pickle spears with a paper towel to remove extra juice before rolling them up.

  1. Peanut Butter Crackles

These puppies take rice crispy treats to a new, creamy level.

These crunchy goodies swap the oh-so-predictable crisped rice cereal for cornflakes, making them resemble a traditional childhood snack popular in Australia called Honey Crackles. The addition of peanut butter gives them a punch of protein.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Then, in a large microwave-safe bowl, combine half a cup of smooth peanut butter together with a 10 oz bag of marshmallows (the minis make the job go a little quicker, but aren’t necessary). Pop in the microwave for 30-second intervals, stirring each time until melted.

Gently stir in eight cups of cornflakes cereal, being careful not to break up the cereal flakes too much.

Arrange into small mounds on the cookie sheet and let cool completely. Place them in the refrigerator for 15-20 minutes to speed up the cooling process. Keep them cool until serving.

This makes approximately 10 servings.

  1. Coins, Cubes and Sticks

A quick and easy combination, just toss a few pieces of pepperoni and cheese cubes together into a zippered sandwich bag with some carrot sticks.

Mix it up by swapping in ham or turkey Land O’Frost Deli Snackers for the pepperoni. Be sure to keep chilled until serving.

  1. Silly String Cheese or Fruit with Designs That Delight

This playful idea encourages creativity and is one your kids will love helping you do.

Using a Sharpie permanent marker, draw silly smiley faces on the plastic sleeve of each prepackaged string cheese stick. The team will be delighted, especially if you have time to customize them for each kid.

Fresh bananas suddenly become way more fun when you write a fun message on them with a Sharpie. Oranges and tangerines become little baseballs, basketballs or soccer balls with a few stitching lines drawn on with a Sharpie marker. Or, consider drawing silly faces on them.
