What's a Croque Madame? Only the cheesiest, most impressive sandwich ever. Made with ham, lots of melted cheese and an egg on top, this easy recipe for this classic French ham and cheese sandwich will have the whole family calling you "Madame." Bon appetit!
 

Ingredients

Sandwich:
  • Two slices white bread
  • 1 package Bistro Favorites Black Forest Ham
  • Gruyere cheese, grated
  • Parmesan cheese, grated
  • Béchamel sauce (See recipe below.)
  • 1 egg
Bechamel Sauce:
  • ¼ ounce flour
  • ¼ ounce butter
  • ½ ounce Gruyere cheese
  • ½ ounce Parmesan cheese
  • 5 ounces milk
  • Salt, white pepper, nutmeg
Egg:
  • 1 egg
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Dried parsley

Instructions

TO ASSEMBLE THE SANDWICH:
  1. Toast the bread in a toaster.
  2. Spread the béchamel sauce on one slice of bread and sprinkle Gruyere and Parmesan cheese on top of the sauce.
  3. Layer with ham.
  4. Spread more sauce and sprinkle more cheese on the ham.
  5. Top with the second slice of bread.
  6. Spread more sauce and sprinkle more cheese on top of bread.
  7. Bake at 350°F for 10-15 minutes or until hot and golden brown.
  8. Top sandwich with a fried egg and enjoy.
 
TO MAKE THE BÉCHAMEL SAUCE:
  1. In a small pot melt butter and stir in flour to make a blond roux.
  2. Cook for 3 minutes on low heat.
  3. Whisk in milk, bring to a boil, and simmer for 5-7 minutes.
  4. Season with salt, white pepper, and nutmeg.
 
FOR THE EGG:
  1. In a frying pan cook an egg sunny side up and season with salt, pepper, and dried parsley.
