It’s starting to get cold isn’t it? Why must it get dark so early? School has started and Fall is coming up fast which means winter is right around the corner. I’m trying not to get ahead of myself thinking of those short days and long cold nights. I’m focusing on the present. September! A great month which is a mix of summer and fall weather, and there’s still plenty of adventure to be found. Here’s are 10 of my favorite activities for the month of September.
Apple Picking – What better way to kick off fall than to head out to a local orchard for an afternoon of apple picking?
Apple Pie and Apple Sauce – After a day of apple picking, we head home and get to work peeling and slicing, cutting and cleaning our just picked apples. It can be a bit labor intensive, but the kids love it and after a little work, the house is filled with the wonderful aroma of cooking apples, be it an apple pie, apple sauce or apple crisp.
Drive to see Leaves – September is a great time to get in the car and head for the hills, well mountains! There is no greater sight than witnessing Autumn’s glory as she paints the mountains with beautiful hues.
Scavenger Hunt – We like to make a list of fall items for the boys to find, either in the yard or on a walk through the woods. Things like acorns, pinecones and leaves. We like to get specific with the leaves, Oak, maple, elm, red, yellow etc. It’s a great way to get the boys interested in nature.
Fire on the Beach – September isn’t know for it’s beach weather, but that’s no excuse not to enjoy the shore. The boys can still play in the sand, and we like to light a fire on the beach and enjoy Smores as the night air cools.
Unpack Fall Clothes – The cooler weather calls for the jackets and sweaters to come down from the attic. My boys love climbing the attic stairs behind my husband and searching for their bins. They also get a peek at the Halloween decorations which will be coming down shortly. That gets them really excited!
Make a Bird Feeder – Grab a pinecone, attach a string, cover it in peanut butter and roll it in bird seed. Not only is it a fun craft, but it sets the stage for a fall and winter of bird watching. I LOVE hearing them screech with delight when the see a bird at their feeder outside the window during breakfast.
Fall Mobile – It may not look like something out of Martha’s latest issue, but the kids love collecting sticks, leaves, pinecones and acorns and creating a mobile. They like to hang the from the trees in the yard and off their swing set.
Walk in the Woods – There’s nothing better on a cool fall day than a walk in the woods. Theres so much to see as the leaves begin to fall and the summer birds head South while the winter birds move in. The boys all carry bags and we hunt for treasures to look at and discuss when we return home to a nice glass of…
Mulled Cider – I LOVE a warm mug of mulled cider. It’s the perfect thing to warm you up on a chilly fall day, and the smell filling the house makes it even sweeter.
