Big vacations are great, but not everyone has the time—or the moolah!—to get away. Here’s the good news: small budgets and limited free time don’t have to mean less fun. What your kids really want is for you to drop the daily stress and spend a little time with them. So do it! Drop the chores and endless to-do lists this weekend and enjoy a little staycation with your family. You’ll be surprised what you can do in your own backyard—literally!
Take a Hike
Adventure is closer than you think. Grab a map and locate a national, state or local park near you that offers hiking trails. Then pack up the kids, lace up those sneakers and get outside for a true nature adventure.
Make a Splash
Nothing beats water play on a hot day! Find a local water park, pool or splash pad for a splashin’ good time. Invite a few friends along, and pack picnic lunch. Don’t forget the sunscreen!
Have a Backyard Campout
Roast marshmallows on the campfire, tell spooky stories and teach the kids how to set up a tent. The whole family will have a blast! Don’t worry, Mom—that pot of coffee is just a few steps away when you wake up in the morning
Explore New Cuisine
One of the best parts of traveling to new places is getting the chance to try new foods. You still have to eat, even on staycation, so why not visit a new restaurant and explore different cuisines in your area?
Get recommendations from your friends on social media or out of your local event magazine for hip new restaurants or food festivals around town. Not a ton of variety in your town? Do some research, and get in the kitchen! Cooking with your kids and making something new and delicious together is a great way to spend an afternoon.
Be a Tourist in Your Own City
Exploring new places is always great fun, but staying close to home and embracing all your city has to offer can be pretty cool too. Research the museums, historical sites and attractions your city has to offer, and then make a list of the ones you’d like to see.
Everyone needs a little break from life sometimes to reset and get in a little quality time with the family, and a staycation is the perfect way to do it! So put the lists away, unplug and start creating memories you and your kids will cherish for years to come—without leaving your hometown!
