The Classic Waffle and 9 New Twists on It

My kids like to watch this silly show called “Teen Titans,” and even though I try, I can’t help myself from singing along with some of the weird songs on the show.

Well, one song is about waffles, and it’s called “Waffles” (original, right)? The originality doesn’t stop there, though, because the WHOLE song is just repeating the word “waffles” over and over again.

As silly as it is, there’s a hint of truth buried in those simplistic lyrics. What more do you have to say than “waffles” to get your salivary glands going? And these days, there are countless waffle recipes with a ton of unique ingredients to pour into those waffle irons! So to get your family singing “Waffles-waffles-waffles” this Saturday morning, try one of these nine mouthwateringly unique twists on a classic breakfast favorite.

  1. Easy Cinnamon Roll Waffles

Simply take a can of cinnamon roll dough, separate the pre-cut rolls and place them one at a time into the waffle iron. When they’re finished, spread them with the icing and you have yourself an easy, brilliant breakfast treat!

  1. Waffle Breakfast Tacos

Just take some frozen waffles, thaw until pliable in the microwave, then turn over a muffin tin and fold the waffles like tacos and place them in the slots to bake until they hold their shape.

In the meantime, scramble up some eggs and fry some bacon to go inside those tacos! Dress them up with cheese and salsa, or add a little sweet to the savory with some maple syrup.

  1. Hash Brown Waffles

Just grab a bag of frozen hash browns, dump out enough to cover the waffle iron, and sprinkle on shredded up slices of Land O’Frost Hickory Smoked Ham, shredded cheese and chives for a loaded waffle!

  1. Strawberry Cheesecake French Toast Waffles

This unique recipe calls for a little more prep work than the others, but not much.

Make some sandwiches with challah bread, cream cheese, strawberry jam and thinly sliced strawberries. Then dip the sandwiches in a mixture of eggs, milk, nutmeg, sugar and cinnamon.

Toast them up in the waffle iron and you have a waffle/French toast hybrid of oozing strawberry deliciousness that will make your family say “oui!”

  1. Easy Pumpkin Pie Waffles

It’s almost time for ALL THINGS PUMPKIN, so this recipe is perfect for fall! It’s so simple, too. Just take some yellow cake mix, pumpkin puree, a little sugar (optional) and pumpkin pie spice (or a combo of your favorite pumpkin pie spices). Mix it all up, toast the waffles, and then top with maple syrup, whipped cream, and/or nuts!

  1. Cinnamon Churro Waffles with Chocolate Dipping Sauce

Those interested in creative waffles but without all gluten will enjoy this gluten-free recipe. It takes a little prep work with the batter and the cinnamon glaze, but I’m going to go out on a limb here and say it’s worth it.

One thing I would change if you’re pressed for time is the homemade chocolate dipping sauce: Make it easy on yourself and heat up some store-bought hazelnut chocolate spread.

  1. Bacon Waffles

Did somebody say “bacon?” It doesn’t matter if I see it, hear it, or smell it; if there’s bacon involved, I’m hungry. Throw together some homemade or store-bought waffle mix, sprinkled with cooked bacon crumbles before toasting in the iron.

  1. Ham Waffles

While we’re on pork products, let’s not exclude ham. This sweet and savory  Chef Tim recipe calls for pancake mix, vanilla extract, cornstarch, eggs, baking powder and diced Land O’ Frost Premium Smoked Ham, all toasted up and served with maple syrup for a salty-sweet breakfast feast.

  1. Cornbread Waffles

These waffles would be good for breakfast OR dinner. Try cornbread muffin mix toasted in the waffle iron with bacon crumbles and topped with pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, and chopped green Chile peppers. Now it’s time to say “ole!”

Whether they’re spicy, salty or gobbed with buttery syrup, waffles-waffles-waffles are all you can probably think about now. You’re welcome!
