Moms are so busy all year long that we rarely have a chance to pick up a book during the summer, the time when we’re supposed to be kicking back and taking things a little easier, and read. How sad! This summer I am changing that. I have two novels I plan to plow through. I used to be able to read books in a week, but now that my life is so busy I have to settle with two before the summer ends. I know I can do it!

Vacation Reading

On vacation I plan to take my books along and spend less time on my laptop. Gasp. That is a hard thing to do for me. I am a hardcore digital mom so putting the laptop aside on vacation even for a little while is a little tortuous. However, it will be nice to get reacquainted with a good book and hold it in my hand. With electronic books taking over, it is a pleasant feeling to simply fee the pages of a great hardcover novel.

Plane Reading

I spend a lot of time on planes, so instead of spacing out or hopping on in-flight Wi-Fi I will bring my books with me. Airplane time is the optimal opportunity to get in some great reading. It’s quiet.  It’s comfortable. It’s the perfect reading atmosphere. The only thing I have to contend with is fighting the urge to fall asleep!
Nighttime Reading

While I don’t watch traditional TV, I watch all my shows either on Hulu or iTunes. This summer instead of watching shows that I can easily catch up on anytime, I will be reading and showing loyalty to the written word for a change.

When you get out of the habit of reading, it’s hard to get back into the groove. I plan to read every night without fail. Some nights I may run through an entire chapter and some nights I might not get past the first two sentences on a page. The important thing, though, is I will be reading instead of idling watching a computer screen.

Electronic Reading

Even though reading books electronically isn’t really my thing, I know the iPad, Kindle and Nook are already in the possession of many moms. Electronic readers provide a great way to open up a book, so to speak. They are lightweight, making them easily portable. This is very appealing as I think about the 600 page tomes I’ll be lugging around all summer. If you want an easier way of reading a book this summer, the electronic options may be your best bet.

I am really looking forward to reading more this summer. What about you? What will you be reading?
